This past week, I had the privilege of being able to attend the MAHFIA Sessions event in Portland, OR. It was an incredible experience. I got to meet tons of awesome women (and a few cool dudes) in the action sports industry and participate in conversations about how to better communicate with girls and women in action sports. I am glad that these conversations are happening because women are a significant part of the action sports community and industry both as consumers and athletes. I am interested to see what kind of change this and future MAHFIA Sessions will be able to enact within the industry.
As great as it was to be able to participate in those discussions, I would be lying if I didn’t say that my favorite part was the girls only session at the Nike SB skatepark. The park itself was rad, but what made it so fun was the group of people I got to skate it with. In the fifteen years since I first picked up a skateboard, I can count on one hand the number of times I have gotten to skate with other female skaters, so it was awesome to just be in the park with so many other ladies shredding. Everyone was super supportive and it was a great environment to be in. Girls were helping other girls learn new tricks and everyone was just generally stoked on what everyone else was doing.
Thank you to MAHFIA, Group Y, Clutched Key Collective, Skate Like A Girl, XS Helmets, Nikita and everyone else involved in making this event happen. I learned a lot about the industry and had so much fun. I can’t wait to hang out and skate with everyone again!
